From the Editor-in-Chief:
Dear readers,
It’s an honor to step into the role of editor-in-chief of Envoy Magazine. I’ve covered the United Nations for nearly a decade, and in that time I’ve watched too many news organizations scale back or close their UN bureaus.
I’ve also heard the familiar refrain: the UN is boring, it doesn’t work, it doesn’t generate enough clicks. And yet, I’m convinced the opposite is true. Many people do want serious reporting on the UN, because it is a microcosm of the world itself. It’s where global tensions surface, where power is negotiated, and where the consequences of conflict, climate shocks, and economic instability collide in real time.
Yes, the world feels unstable. And no, the international order doesn’t look particularly healthy right now. But at UN Headquarters, diplomats and negotiators are working around the clock to prevent crises from escalating and to find imperfect, often hard-won compromises. Alongside them, a remarkable community of UN correspondents—many of whom contribute to Envoy—brings readers inside the rooms where decisions are shaped: the negotiations, the late-night huddles, the quiet breakthroughs, and the public showdowns. Our job is to tell you not only what happens, but why it matters.
One of Envoy’s greatest strengths is its global network of journalists. They bring local expertise and hard-earned perspective—exactly what’s needed to understand the nuance behind the headlines. In this issue, you’ll read reporting from across the world, from Brazil to Italy to Iran and Ukraine. And we’re expanding. Wherever you are, I want to hear from you. Pitch me your story!
Over the coming months, Envoy will enter its next chapter. We’ll grow our online and social presence, and we’ll also expand our real-world presence through events and conversations beyond the page. We also plan to deepen our ties with students and universities—especially those based in New York City—so we can learn from emerging voices and spotlight new talent.
On a personal note, I want to meet as many diplomats, UN officials, civil society representatives, journalists, and—most importantly—readers as possible. I want to hear what you’re curious about, what you think the UN gets right and wrong, and what you want Envoy to investigate next.
Finally, I want to sincerely thank my predecessor, Betul Yuruk. Envoy would not exist without her vision and persistence.
I hope you enjoy this issue as much as I’ve enjoyed editing it, and I hope you’ll write to tell us what you’d like to read next.
Thank you for being with us,
Your editor-in-chief,
Stéphanie Fillion
