The United Nations has appointed Joseph Gordon-Levitt as its first Global Advocate for Human-Centric Digital Governance, signaling a shift toward making digital policy more accessible, inclusive, and grounded in everyday experience.

Designated through the Internet Governance Forum (IGF) and supported by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs, the role aims to bridge the gap between complex global tech debates and the realities they shape.

“Digital technologies are evolving faster than our ability to respond,” said Li Junhua, emphasizing the need for accountability and inclusion.

Gordon-Levitt, who has engaged with the IGF since 2025 and recently addressed the United Nations General Assembly during the World Summit on the Information Society, brings a creative industry perspective to issues like AI, digital labor, and online platforms.

His mandate: translate complex policy into public understanding, amplify diverse global voices, and ensure that as digital systems evolve, human impact remains at the center.

At a time when AI is reshaping economies and societies, the UN’s message is clear—digital governance must not only be innovative, but human.
