New York, December 13, 2024 –  Betul Yuruk, senior international correspondent and executive editor of Envoy Magazine, was awarded the Gold Elizabeth Neuffer Memorial Prize by the United Nations Correspondents Association (UNCA) in New York on December 13.

The award, named in honor of Elizabeth Neuffer, the late Boston Globe bureau chief who died while reporting in Baghdad in 2003, is presented annually to journalists for outstanding coverage of the United Nations, its agencies, and field operations.

Yuruk was recognized for her exceptional reporting on global affairs, including a feature interview with UN expert Richard Gowan that explored the evolving role of the United Nations in addressing international crises.

In the interview, Gowan expressed concern over the UN’s diminishing effectiveness, citing divisions within the Security Council and a lack of decisive action.

“This award is a significant milestone and deeply personal,” Yuruk said in her acceptance speech. “It comes at a time when I am focused on building an independent media platform to support foreign journalists and promote free media alongside my colleague Razi Canikligil, founder of Envoy Magazine.”

Yuruk dedicated the award to journalists killed in Gaza and Ukraine, as well as those silenced or imprisoned across the globe.

The annual UNCA Awards celebrate excellence in journalism across print, broadcast, and online media for their coverage of the United Nations. Other recipients this year included FRANCE 24, PassBlue, and Ireland’s RTE Television.
